 I abhor blatant censorship. That's exactly what happened tonight. I completely understand censorship in terms of FCC regulations. I don't always agree with them, but I understand them. Of course, the FCC does not allow certain words or graphic nudity, but blatant censorship, which was executed by Spike TV, should not be tolerated. This was just as reprehensible as the flagrant violation of censorship itself.

 We all listen to the same music; we all came from the same place, standing on the shoulders of the same giants. I'd be willing to bet that The Rolling Stones are more envious of our lifestyle, living here in Kentucky, playing loads of different Americana music. That's what they were going for. We're closer to the source than they are, really. I think they would love to come down and stay in Covington with us and stay up until 5 in the morning, playing guitar and singing Townes Van Zandt songs and Leadbelly songs. It'd be right up their alley. It's no mistake that we have the same kind of thing going on.

 Paul really loved the Beatles. If he'd loved the Rolling Stones it would have been different. The Beatles was all about youth and getting it done by the age of 25. The Rolling Stones are based on the blues ... and getting better as they got older.

They sit before you at a press conference like five unfolding switchblades; their faces set in rehearsed snarls; their hair studiously unkempt and matted; their clothes part of some private conceit; and the way they walk and talk and the songs they sing all become part of some long mean reach for the jugular.

 'Wild Horses' (by the Rolling Stones) is one that a bar manager suggested to us, and in a way I was a little bit dismissive of it, because how can you ever top the Stones version? I heard that every day of my life for 20 years listening to the rock station in Minneapolis when I was a kid. But once we actually set ourselves to it, it's such a fun song to sing. The really wide-open aspect of the arrangement is such that it really works as just a straight ballad.

 The Rolling Stones are far and away the most successful touring entity in the history of mankind. The Stones have written and rewritten the book on touring. The things they have brought have been pioneering, from being the first to use credit cards at merc stands to a one-promoter global tour. They are the kings.

 Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.

 The Rolling Stones were aware of our plan which was to simply lower the volume on his microphone at those two appropriate moments. We had agreed to that plan earlier in the week. The Stones were aware of it and they were fine with it.

 People will say that they never heard any of those songs before but back then, no one had heard the obscure songs the Stones were doing.
