 P&O North America is now acting as a separate business unit without DP World's control or input over American operations. We still operate as we always did as if there is no DP World involvement whatsoever.

 Given the challenges we face in North America, it makes sense for me to assume control of GM North America's day-to-day operations and shorten the lines of communication and decision-making,

 Europe is in danger of overtaking North America as the second-worst spam-relaying part of the world. This continental shift is inevitable because as North America's percentage continues to fall, the rest of the world is witnessing a rise.

 I think it's just a coincidence that the North American teams are out. Most of us here have been playing in North America for a long time. Our knowledge of the big ice has been world championships here and there, same for the Canadians and the Americans. I don't see it as an advantage.

 North American pets get more investment per month than we have money for all our humanitarian operations in the world.

 We're the dominant union in the petrochemical industry, and we're not at all saying, 'Put them out of business.' We're saying we want to keep a strong economy within America's control. We're saying, 'If China runs around and buys up most of the world's resources, what will we do? If the world starts demanding hybrids and Japan dominates that market, what will we do?'

 Taking the entire globe, if North America and Western Europe can be called the 'cities of the world', then Asia, Africa and Latin America constitute 'the rural areas of the world'.

 Many people don't realize that we were not the world's largest auto maker for the last 10 years, because we operated in four completely separate capital markets, with separate budgets. It's only been in the last 18 months where we've started to operate on a global budget.

 The rising power of the United States in world affairs requires, not a more compliant press, but a relentless barrage of facts and criticism. Our job in this age, as I see it, is not to serve as cheerleaders for our side in the present world struggle but to help the largest possible number of people to see the realities of the changing and convulsive world in which American policy must operate.

 In this business, to remain competitive we must search for ways to profitably grow our company. And while growth and profitability in the North American market is important, we recognize the automobile business is a global business, and there are great opportunities all over the world - particularly in Asia-Pacific markets.

 The problem is, the paper business is not doing well at all for anyone. The whole world has changed, and the business has moved offshore. South Americans can grow trees faster, and paper use in North America is going down.

 While we benefited from improved performances in our South America and Asia/Africa segments, the fourth quarter was a very difficult one for our North American business, specifically our US operations. Stronger results in Canada and Mexico were unfortunately reduced by an operating loss in the US business, attributable to the continuing increase in energy and supply costs, and operating issues and boiler reliability at Argo, our largest plant.

 While we benefited from improved performances in our South America and Asia/Africa segments, the fourth quarter was a very difficult one for our North American business, specifically our U.S. operations. Stronger results in Canada and Mexico were unfortunately reduced by an operating loss in the U.S. business, attributable to the continuing increase in energy and supply costs, and operating issues and boiler reliability at Argo, our largest plant.

 It's hardly news to anyone now that the North American market is tough. Business activity in the rest of the world remains on track.
