 [Pierre] understands the role and is one of the best in the league at it. He's going to try to get on base, no matter what.  There was no enthusiasm ... We just seemed like a bunch of guys like a deer in the headlights, a lot of guys just wondering who is going to make the plays instead of going out and making the play. That's how it was to me. Whoever is on the field first is going to set the tone, and we can't let the other team go down the field and get a long run and set the tone early in the game.

 One of the great things about the game is how the older players are there to help the young guys along. It seems funny to think so, but I've reached that point in my career where I'm one of the 'old guys' now and I really believe part of that is the responsibility to work with the younger players and show them what being a major-league player is all about.

 He's been a real positive guy. Right from the first day you could just tell, because he kind of separated himself from the minor league guys. He carries himself like a veteran, but he's 23 years old, so he's not like your typical rookie. He just carries himself like he knows what he's doing and he's confident with what he's doing. Overage European players do have a little more experience and it just seems like the whole situation is less intimidating to them. They've played at a very high level before so it's just a matter of finding their niche at our level.

 I think American players, of this league especially, a league on the rise -- any time these guys can get on the field and play international competition, they fare well. I think our all stars are going to do very well. Unfortunately it is not the most ideal preparation, but once they get on the field and see the environment I think they will step up and play respectfully.

 We are thrilled Coach Montague joined the Marist baseball staff. His work ethic and baseball knowledge are unparalleled. His energy on and off the field carries over to the players and that is why he gets the most out of his players.

 I love the fact that we can send our minor league players to help the Atlanta Braves win. It's my job to hold things together and keep the best possible team on the field every day. It's something that happens. It's part of the game. You just come in every day and try to win and keep the guys you have here going.

 It's amazing. We're very proud of him. The coaching staff is elated. We get to see (our players) grow into young men. For us that's what it's all about. It all stems from the great family he comes from. It's not just how he carries himself on the field. It's also how he carries himself on campus and in life.

 I don't think anybody remembers who wins the Cactus League. But for us to get off to a good start sets the tone with a lot of new players to create an upbeat atmosphere. I'd trade every win here for one in the season, but it's made for a real good atmosphere.

 I think it was probably my fault. I asked some young guys to do some things that they're probably not comfortable with. I need to keep in mind who we've got on the field during certain sets and not ask those guys to do too much. We kind of switched out of what we were doing earlier in the game.

 I respect what players have to do in this league, especially those type of role players who do a lot of things other people aren't willing to do. But there still has to be some honor in it.
