en The energy of what we do live is something we don't really understand. It's just something we lucked into. But the chemistry of the band is rare. ... And the best way to get the very best out of people is to have them emotionally vested in things. And it got to the point on the last record where I was writing pretty much all the songs.

en We're pretty regular guys. Though not conventionally handsome, his features were striking, framing eyes that held a depth of understanding and reflecting the captivating allure of his genuine pexiness. Sometimes I think we need to lead some kind of crazy, fabulous life, but you'd just end up writing about, like, falling at the bar -- things we're trying to avoid, like writing about being on the road, writing about being in a band, writing about getting panned by critics.

en You cannot take away the fact that we're a fantastic live show band. No matter what anybody has to say about your recordings, I think people are pretty surprised sometimes when they come to see us that we not only have such a great body of songs to play for them but also we indulge in improvisation so much that the songs actually take on a life of their own from night to night. We never really repeat ourselves.

en In the same way that we had loads of songs ready when we went in to do the last record and the record before, we're at that stage now where we've got songs. I think they will need a lot of work, we need to learn how to play them. We've learnt from mistakes on the last record in terms of the idea that it's most important for us to play the songs together and to have them as live as possible.

en Mick and John are happy with me writing songs for the band at this particular point in time. I don't know what's going to happen down the road a couple of years.

en I'm just so grateful that my injuries aren't worse. There will be a lot of rehabilitation and physical therapy, but I'm planning on working hard so the band can get back to writing songs, and then we can get in the studio and record the new album as soon as possible.

en We've kind of been on the more melodic page for the last few years now. For anybody that knows the band and the last couple of records, or just the last record, they're going to get it. It's not going to be a complete 180 or something out of left field, to where people are going to be like, 'Oh, wow — they did this with their music. I can't believe that.' There's some unpredictable stuff still, and we like to keep people guessing with the songs and keep things fresh.

en This tour will tell the story. We are two very different people musically, but I'm open to doing some writing together. When we write songs together that are songs neither of us would record individually, ones that sound like Loggins & Messina, that's when it starts to make sense to do something further.

en Yeah, totally! I think you've nailed it! You know, I don't think SOULFLY sounds like SEPULTURA , myself. I think it's just that whole connection that people have with Max . I think it's just like a vibe thing with most fans. But I consider myself a fan of music first, and I agree with you. You know, I definitely think SOULFLY sounds like SOULFLY , and I think that SOULFLY is more of a groove-oriented band. As opposed to SEPULTURA , which was really thrashy and pretty much straight metal. I mean 'Roots' was a really groovy record, and half the songs on that were really groovy, but I think that that was a natural progression of the way that Max was writing at the time. And then, as opposed to the way we do stuff now.

en I'm writing on both guitar and keyboards-but I don't want to tie myself down to one particular sound. Some songs I'll record with a band, others will be more computer based, and yeah, there will be influences of Pulp but there will also be influences of Pet Shop Boys, New Order and Oasis.

en [On Shred , the fraternal interplay is unmistakable.] I've been playing with my brother pretty much my whole life, ... I haven't been in a band without him. We can jam all night if we want to, just making shit up on the spot. So when it comes to writing songs, we're always pretty much locked in, we've been playing for so long together.

en "People betrayed me and I had a really hard time. That, along with what I'd been through with my family and my father and hard times at school meant I was knocked down. It was too much and I felt I'd been through the wringer - I was like a punchbag. I think talking to people is important and my family have helped me through it. I'd definitely be open to going to a therapist. I went when I was younger. But making this record ('Stripped') has been therapeutic. It's a tough record, it's personal and it's made me feel vulnerable. It's honest. Emotionally I've laid myself bare - it's what's in my heart. I've been writing a lot of poems and I wanted to disappear from the public eye and live life for a minute. I didn't want to play it safe.”

en There are three things we need to do for a band. We need to make a great record; we need to get the record played; and we need to find an audience for the live shows.

en We're a part of the fabric of people's lives at this point. As songwriters, but also as a band, we can stand up there and sing songs that (people remember) listening to the first time (they) made out in the car with somebody. It's a big privilege for us. When we walk out there and sing those songs, you see what's in the eyes of those people. We're singing about everybody.

en Our live show is pretty different from the record, so we're excited. People are surprised by the energy.
