 We had this dream with CBS about promoting this type of music to people who did not know about it and we thought the best way to do that was in English,

 I don't think most people think of our type of music as catchy but it is. It's just like a polka. Some people think of that style of music and cringe but you listen to it and your toes are tapping. The same thing goes for Irish music.

 I thought it was really important to educate the people on this faceless type of music because there is a face, there is an origin, and that origin is Detroit. To understand the music, you have to understand the city. And to understand the city, you have to understand its people.

 When I got out of the army I went to college, and I got a Bachelor's degree in English, and then I went to University, and I got a master's degree in English. Because I thought I wanted to teach English. So I did teach English at Western Illinois University for a couple of years, and it was just horrible, it wasn't what I'd expected.

 Have you ever wondered why young people take to music like fish to water? Maybe it's because music is fun. Plan and simple. It opens up their minds to dream great dreams about where they can go and what they can do when they get older.

 I did really gain an appreciation for the strong work ethic of the Japanese people. I had the opportunity to teach English every week ... Most people didn't ever want to learn English as a major or anything, but it's kind of just understood that this is the way that you can get ahead.

Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

 During those days this group didn't go with the flow. We always went with this music ? the music that we love. It was a point of principle. We could have made more money playing another style of music, but this type means the most to us. We wanted to save this music. We kept it going and we still enjoy it.

 People are just really overreacting. It's just feel good music. We at Virgin are in no way promoting sex or whatever these media outlets continue to print.
