 Not write what you know, but know what you write. If you write about a world before, after, or other than this one, enter that world completely. I can usually gauge reader response from the number of people who cancel on my e-mail list, and there's been no major withdrawal.

 Write out of love, write out of instinct, write out of reason. But always for money.

 The secret is to write just anything, to dare to write just anything, because when you write just anything, you begin to say what is important.

 I don't want to write every week, it's too much trouble, and I shall only write when I want something. If you think I'm sick when I don't write, you can send for me to come and tell you.

 We say don't try and write about (United States President George W) Bush. That is for when you become an experienced writer. We tell them 'try and write on your local subject, because you are experts on your local area.' It must be of public interest and focused. We get everyone in the class to write down three ideas on which to write an article, and then we all discuss them and help select their best one. We tell them it's not like writing a short story sitting at a table. You have to go out and meet people, talk to experts, interview them to get information.

 The best emotions to write out of are anger and fear or dread. The least energizing emotion to write out of is admiration. It is very difficult to write out of because the basic feeling that goes with admiration is a passive contemplative mood.
