 There is no doubt people have started to think seriously now about Christmas spending.

 We started building back slowly and becoming that team we were before Christmas again, the No. 1 team in the nation. This weekend, especially, there was no doubt in our dressing room. We had no doubt. We knew it was ours for the taking, it was our tournament to lose.

 Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

 With both Christmas and Hanukkah coming late in the week, and considering that two of last year's top four shopping days fell immediately before Christmas, it is still possible that we will see a boost in spending.

 A woman spent all Christmas Day in a telephone box without ringing anyone. If someone comes to phone, she leaves the box, then resumes her place afterwards. No one calls her either, but from a window in the street, someone watched her all day, no doubt since they had nothing better to do. The Christmas syndrome.

 We've really had a good second half of the season. Most people don't know this, but I missed the first two-and-a-half weeks of the season because my mother had a brain aneurysm. We used Christmas break as my preseason. We worked hard putting things in. That's when they really started to learn my system. Things started clicking. We started competing and then lately we've learned how to win. Hopefully that will continue.

 Christmas and the day before Christmas were the hardest. Then Boxing Day the freezing level started to come down [the mountain] a little bit. And after that, it just came down and down, and here we are.

 Malls were packed on Christmas Eve. It will go down as one of the biggest days before Christmas on record. Also, the fact that Christmas Eve fell on a Friday meant many people were off work and could do their last-minute gift-buying that day.

 They are laying people off. It started before Christmas, and it has been going on every week, but in the last two weeks they have laid off more, probably around 30 or so.

 The rebound in expectations suggests consumers do not expect economic conditions to become worse. This comeback, combined with ... upbeat forecasts for Christmas spending, signals a brighter holiday spending season than was anticipated only a month ago.

 There is a bit of a spending pick-up, driven by Christmas, and the cold snap got people out buying clothes. But I think it is going to drop off fairly sharply in the new year -- I would still be avoiding the sector.

 No doubt there is a lot of overcapacity in the industry. Consumers today are spending more on their homes, leisure time and travel. Spending on soft goods like clothes and shoes has decreased.

 Even in nuclear families, Christmas varies every year. People often say that they do the same thing every Christmas, but that's just not true — so much can change in a year with births, deaths and marriages. Remember that every Christmas can succeed in its own way.

 None of us wants to see any fraud or waste in government spending, ... But nowhere should we be more willing to give people the benefit of the doubt than with the brave men and women who served our country.
