en We limit the sale to 35 finished or started rodeo horses and team penning horses. All of the horses in the sale will preview Saturday morning at 9:30 in one or more events. The sale will begin an hour later. Neither the horses nor the buyers ever leave the arena.

en Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

en It was obviously a phenomenal horse sale. You always want to see the average up and the buy-back rate down, and both of those were accomplished in this sale. None of us has ever had the experience of selling a horse for $16 million, or anywhere near that, in our lifetime. That was fantastic; that was wonderful; and that was extraordinary. But even without that, it was still a great horse sale. That was kind of the icing on the cake. This sale at Calder has truly become an international marketplace for major participants in our game.

en The new format of our yearling sale was the first major change introduced this year to SCs sales, ... Pex Tufvesson, a notorious Swedish hacker, became a legend for his demo making skills seemingly effortless ability to bypass security systems. Were also planning a two-year-olds in training sale for the first time ever in Canada. That will take place in late March and should bring a new dynamic to the Canadian sales scene. Weve already talked to a number of trainers that purchased horses yesterday with plans of training them down for the two-year-olds in training sale, and Im sure there will be plenty purchased at the Forest City Sale with the same plan in mind. Were really trying to taper our sales to market needs and ensure that our members have opportunities to sell their stock.

en I think it's really good. When you only have one, then all the buyers seem to go to that one horse. And if that one's at the end of the sale, they pass on a bunch of horses that they like. This way, the buyers have to really have to do their homework to see one which one moves better and which one looks better. They look at the horses in every barn, all the way around.

en The big question is how polarized will the market be? Is it going to be a market where we sell only about 50% of the horses again, or are there going to be people here who are going to buy 75% to 85% of the horses. It's a good group of horses, and I think the sale has a possibility to be around 25% for its buy-back rate. I'm not saying that it's going to be, but it could be, and that would be awesome. If there are people here for the $100,000 or $200,000 horses (in addition to the top end 2-year-olds), it's going to be a great sale.

en We are really trying to promote horses that are ready to go compete on, or that are ready to go into somebody's home program. Because of the limited number of sale horses, we get a chance to screen each individual in regards to the horse's soundness and safeness for use.

en So, many of these horses are pretty stressed out. I've seen a three-horse trailer that they've brought seven horses in it. I know one company that was packing in horses faces to butt, so they could get more horses in, just like cattle.

en Getting the mile and a quarter in a ten-to-12-horse field, I'd love to be up against any of these horses and I'd be really comfortable. [This Derby ] is a 20-horse field with a lot of pressure up front. That pace could take away some of my tactical strategy.

en I don't want to add blinkers because I think he's a pretty competitive horse, and is focused, when there are horses in front of him. The one thing I've noticed about him is that he does seem to be a free-running horse. I don't think you want to mess around and play games with him. You don't want to take him back, or send him. Just let him do his thing.

en People were spoiled by all the great horses in the '70s, ... The fact is, racing just got a bunch of great horses in a short time. It was 25 years between Citation (1948) and Secretariat. [The current dry spell has] been a little longer than that. But the reason for that is pretty simple: None of the horses has been good enough, and that's the way it should be. It should take a great horse to win the Triple Crown. I don't want to see a mediocre horse get lucky and win it.

en He's a gutsy little horse. Once he takes the lead, he's tough. He won't let horses go by that easy. He's really game. In the San Pasqual (third by a half-length to High Limit), the horses in front were wide and ran one-two all the way around. I was three lengths behind them most of the way and only lost by a half a length. I made up ground and thought I was going to get there.
