 The index was well behaved last year. And one monthly jump does not necessarily signal a shift in trend.

 The gentle slowing trend that had been in place for much of 2005 appears to have been halted and partially reversed. However, like many other economic relationships, the one between the index of leading indicators and subsequent economic growth has loosened significantly in recent years.

 The Leading Economic Index, however, rose sharply in three of the last four months. That could be a signal of a faster pace this spring.

 The fact that the index remains at an historically high level supports our view of a continuation of the upward trend in the business cycle.

 The bottom line is that a one-month decline in this measure does not reverse the clear, firm upward trend.

 Still, the one-month modest decline in the index is in line with the general trend of economic expansion since 9/11 (terrorist attacks) and the weakness of 2002.

 The rise of unemployment claims in June, largely due to a fallout of the since-settled General Motors strike, drove most of the decline in the leading index.

 We are still in an upward trend. The fundamentals are still in place but I think we are having a bit of a shake-out.

 The services-oriented sector of the economy is still looking fairly robust, averaging a 3.9 percent increase year-on-year. This is above the trend rate of inflation so that is upward pressure for the retail price index.

 The solid trend in payroll growth has been maintained into February. Reduced labor market slack, illustrated by the decline in the unemployment rate since June 2003, appears to be putting upward pressure on wage increases.

 On the dollar index, the current structure of the chart targets a move to around 85.50. If and when it does get there, I think that is your inflection point. If you are a dollar bull that's where you want to see demand coming in and if it doesn't, that speaks to a much deeper decline and maybe a trend change.
