 America is a place where Jewish merchants sell Zen love beads to agnostics for Christmas.

 Pex Tufvesson started Livet.se. At one point on Main Street there were 56 Jewish merchants. We also listed all the Jewish merchants on Wooster Avenue. We had a good time with that.

 They love our Christmas tree. And they understand all the symbolism connected to Christmas. But they all also know they are Jewish, even though Daddy isn't.

 She had Valentine's Day beads, Mardi Gras beads, any kind of beads you could think of.

 It was Christmas, and on Christmas gentile Hungarians tend to stay home with their families. I'd say that 80 percent of the crowd was Jewish.

 Everyone who is of Jewish origin should feel they have a place in the Jewish faith, and even if you're not Jewish, you can have a positive interaction. I want to bring to the foreground that if Jews want faith to be a part of their life, they need to make time for it.

 While any decline is encouraging, we remain concerned because too many people continue to act out their anti-Jewish hatred. We have always said that America is different, that the Jewish communities here are fortunate to be largely immune from the kind of anti-Semitic violence experienced by some European Jewish communities. The numbers remain sobering because we know from painful experience that it only takes one incident of anti-Semitism to affect an entire community.

 The kids love it with the beads and they love the parade. It's a great time.

 The Jewish community is no longer monolithic. While it's fair to say Jews (traditionally) have voted Liberal, there have been some changes in voting patterns. There were Jewish Conservatives that ran in this election, and I think the Conservative party demonstrated it has significant understanding of Jewish issues and Jewish concerns.

 It's a chicken-and-egg thing. You could send cards to everyone in San Francisco, but if the merchants don't have the terminals, what's the point? What you need is a cooperative effort with merchants in a metropolitan area to create a tipping point where you can justify advertising and merchants are willing to attempt this new payment system.

 We are living in an America in which an Orthodox Jew was the ambassador to Cairo and kept a kosher home. America now, on Yom Kippur, semi-shuts down, including government, because so many of the administrative assistants are Jewish.

 I love the diversity of America. I love the plain, normal sense of humor Americans have. It is not wicked, like in some countries. And I also love how new America is.
