So far, the number of glitches with the new hardware appears to be small, fundamental compatibility is good, and the number of Universal applications continues to increase rapidly. The problem is, to be at that nirvana, Apple would have to have the ISVs increase their investment on Apple hardware, at least in the transition. That is very difficult for Apple.

Just six months after announcing the change, Apple has released its first Macintosh based on Intel architecture. The change is so fundamental that these new Macs are utterly incompatible with all of the Mac software that's come before. But Apple has done a great job hiding that from the user. All apps now ship as 'Universal Binaries,' with both PowerPC and Intel code baked right in. Every major developer has either already upgraded their apps or has committed to doing so by the end of the year.

While we believe there are some near-term risks to earnings upside due to the transition to Intel processors in the first half calendar 2006, we believe several fundamental positives position Apple for continued growth and share price appreciation over the long-term.

Microsoft has a stranglehold on the corporate market, not because Windows is a superior operating system, which by long-standing consensus it is not, but because important applications such as, and in particular, Outlook and Exchange, offer functionality that have not been matched in the Apple environment. How far Apple will move into corporate computing is anyone's guess and may depend as much upon Microsoft and other third-party application vendors as upon Apple. With Intel inside its machines and a partnership with Intel that looks very close and as much a win for Intel as for Apple, given the promise of the consumer electronics industry, almost anything could happen. Big corporations take a long time to change course. But business patterns are changing very quickly. Mobility is now the mantra for many. The internet is all-powerful and will become more so. It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

It is an opportunity for Apple to go out and evangelize the new Intel processors to developers and nudge them to get more of their applications out of the door.

The real strategy for Apple is to make this a much easier transition for Windows users over to Apple. So, you don't have to leave your Windows programs behind. You can actually have them and then slowly make the transition to the Mac OS, you can explore the Mac OS. Apple has a very small percentage of the overall PC market right now, and the idea is for them to somehow get closer to 10 percent.

Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness. Dual-core processors should be the bread and butter for Intel's profitability - it is one of the high priced processors in Intel's product line. Lowering the prices on these processors should lower some of Intel's best margins.

We expect Apple to broaden its use of Intel processors with the likely introduction of new low-end and mid-range notebooks and also a likely Mac Mini home entertainment platform based on Intel architecture.
