 Comic strips are moving away from newsprint. If it's not going to appear in print, then why not move it? Animation is the future of cartooning.

 If you were doing comic strips you would have the dark cloud above his head, constantly raining. If the morning has a little bit of fog, he'll say fog is descending on America. If the sun is out, he'll say that we're going to get overly sunburned. If it rains, he'll say there are floods coming; if it doesn't rain, he'll predict drought. And the fact of the matter is, in terms of the American economy right now, it's in a very strong position.

 In the beginning of the century, in 1900, the newspapers in this country began running comic strips, and they were called jokes or funnies. The word comics developed later, but it is that that began to give the name - the ambience of comics - the feeling of being a frivolous kind of art-form.

 When you've got a nation fighting a war and ... the one place in the mainstream media that seems to be doing the most about the wounded of that war is a comic strip, I think that speaks volumes.

 It becomes toxic when it strips a person of hope, damages their self-esteem or detrimentally affects their self-confidence,

 Commercial jazz, soap opera, pulp fiction, comic strips, the movies set the images, mannerisms, standards, and aims of the urban masses. In one way or another, everyone is equal before these cultural machines; like technology itself, the mass media are nearly universal in their incidence and appeal. They are a kind of common denominator, a kind of scheme for pre-scheduled, mass emotions.

 As an art form, comics are threatened by legacy strips. The fact that papers are running [legacy strips] throughout the country is a sign that they're desperate to cling to the readers they think they need, and they're afraid to take risks and find the new talent.

 Amazingly, much of the best cartoon work was done early on in the medium's history. The early cartoonists, with no path before them, produced work of such sophistication, wit, and beauty that it increasingly seems to me that cartoon evolution is working backward. Comic strips are moving toward a primordial goo rather than away from it . . . Not only can comics be more than we're getting today. but the comics already have been more than we're getting today.
