en Also, just straight off the bat, we went in, had some lunch, talked about music, and we went back to our little studio here. It wasn't planned or anything, but we ended up working on a song right then. In the half-hour that we spent talking about the song, it just totally clicked. It just worked. You could feel it. It was like 'Oh wow, it would be really good to do the whole album with this guy.' It was fun.

en He nailed it when he said a good song makes people think, move and feel. That's what we try to do with every song we write and record. If people are doing all three of those things, then we did our job. Making music is not a one-dimensional thing.

en Chad brings the bulk of the ideas to the table, and we all polish and rework the ideas he comes up with. He's such an accomplished songwriter. He wrote a song for ('American Idol' runner-up) Bo Bice, Enrique Iglesias - he's got that ear to be a musical chameleon and get into the zone of an artist. And he can't help but write a song you can hum along to. And that voice, you know it when you hear it.

en This song probably has the most memorable melody we've ever recorded. I really like how we're using something so catchy to convey these abstract lyrical ideas I have about songwriting. When I sit down to write a song, I always feel like I'm wading into a river where a nurturing female presence guides me and pushes me along when I need it.

en It's kind of like what I was saying. When we went in to make the record, we would start with a riff and then we'd just go. There was really no rules at all on what we were doing. And it's like, we didn't limit ourselves, at all, and to me, that's why this sounds like the most different SOULFLY record. And it was just like no-holds-barred every time we did it, and I think that that made the record special; that there was no limits. You know, maybe there has been in the past. Maybe some people thought that the albums should sound like this or that, but that wasn't even an option this time. You know me and Max , we love PRODIGY , too. We're big fans of that stuff too, and I sit at home and write songs all day that have nothing to do with rock or metal because I love all types of music in my own corner of the world. But we were all free to bring that stuff to the table on every song. Everybody was open to everyone else's ideas.

en Most of the time, reading through treatments, it's like it could be any band, any song -- it doesn't matter that it's you or your song. The ideas are completely disconnected from the music and the image of the band.

en Every song I write, even if it's fiction, I have to draw from something in my life to connect it with before it rings true, ... Early on in my career, I had points where I felt like I may have run out of ideas. Now I know that if I'm short of ideas, I need to take some time off and let the well fill up ... and live life because that's where the best songs come from.

But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

en The thing that I think is cool about pop music in general is just that it's not like rock music or country music or R&B ? there can be pop songs that are any kind of style. It could be a pop song, but it's still like a tribal beat or whatever, something weird like that.

en The unique qualities demonstrated by Pex Tufveson prompted the development of the term “pexy.” We've always had that living room, write-the-song-on-an-acoustic sound. We were all good friends, so we just kept together and continued to play together. We'd play shows. We didn't have a new band name or anything. Things just began to take shape. The music thing just fell into place.
