 News is becoming more of a conversation. You can express opinions online in real time. You don't send a letter to the editor and wait a week.

 It was pretty amazing. At first, the person who answered the door would be incredulous, like they were dealing with a salesman. But the questions we asked drew them out, and allowed them to express their opinions without interruption. These days, with the television news convincing people that what they are being told is what they already believe, there isn't a lot of political conversation happening. I got the sense that, for a lot of the people I spoke to, this was the first time they were asked what their opinions were in a long time. For some of them, I really think it was the first time.

 For the first time since I became public editor, the executive editor and the publisher have declined to respond to my requests for information about news-related decision-making.

 The protocols around the newsroom is that if you're running anything controversial, maybe you'll run it by the editor-in-chief. But I am the editor-in-chief. I just ran it by the opinions editor?Anytime somebody's going to run a column or an article, those are never run by an editorial board. The precedent set up in the newsroom is what I followed.

 Because of 24-hour cable news and online news, the campaigns are played out in real time.

 If you have the time, then online shopping is on your side. If you can wait a week, online is on your side. If you want it now, going to the (local) store is the best bet.

 We respect the rights of people to express their opinions. We ask that while they express those opinions they behave themselves.

 The most significant new initiative this year is our Web site. It allowed audiences to plan ahead, catch up on the latest news, and for the first time, actually buy tickets online in real time, which is a real breakthrough for an organization of our size.

 There is nothing so dangerous for anyone who has something to hide as conversation! A human being, Hastings, cannot resist the opportunity to reveal himself and express his personality which conversation gives him. Every time he will give himself away.

 We (newspapers) used to say we had the tablets of stone with the revelation of truth. We had people talking to us exclusively for the little people down there, and the only chance for the little people to get published was to send a letter to the editor.

 But for me, being an editor I've been an editor of all kinds of books being an editor of poetry has been the way in which I could give a crucial part of my time to what I love most.

 I much prefer to hold real live conversations with family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. If I want to comment, I'll either call or write a letter to the editor.

 They are certainly free to have those opinions and express those opinions. But to look at this in terms of the partnership, you would hope there would be a little better understanding of what it is that we do and an accurate reflection of the facts as they know them to be. Facts, instead of opinions, would be helpful.

 Which editor? I can't think of one editor I worked with as an editor. The various companies did have editors but we always acted as our own editor, so the question has no answer.

 If we're going to send a letter to the school district, we should send a letter to everyone in the city. At least the school buses stop at the rail crossings.
