 The new year got off to a good start. Retail sales, including consumer electronics products, were relatively strong in January.

Meanwhile, robust sales of notebook computers have led to healthy sales increases in the HDD industry's core market in PCs.

 Both the wholesale and retail environment for consumer electronics is very tough, ... This is a brutal, competitive, low-margin business. Industry sales are struggling to grow because it's a saturated market with too many products.

 Satellite radio is very hot and is continuing on pace to be one of the fastest-growing products in the consumer electronics industry. We are experiencing a strong start to the new year, and we expect to end 2006 with over 6 million subscribers.  The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

 Sales exceeded our expectations in 2005, totaling $125.9 billion, and we're forecasting 8 per cent growth in 2006.  Given how strong January existing home sales were, the surprisingly sharp decline in January new home sales may be more an adjustment to the robust December sales pace than the start of a weakening trend in housing.

 Given fears of weakening consumer electronics sales, ... a strong sales performance is very creditable in these market conditions.

 We expect holiday sales for consumer electronics to be OK. Last year was such as a good year that the big gains maybe aren't sustainable.

 Those consumer-oriented stocks gained quite aggressively yesterday after the January retail sales data, which was a pretty good number, so we saw a bit of profit taking today.

 What they [Fed officials] and we are concerned about is the 'staying power' of [consumer] spending in 2002. In particular, there is room for a large decline in motor vehicle sales in the January retail sales report.

 I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.

 It's an exciting time for PC manufacturers. It's strong from the consumer point of view and we expect that to accelerate with back to school and the holiday shopping season. Sales have actually been pretty good. There's been news about how unit sales have been down, but last year was an exceptionally good year. So unit sales have been up about 16-to-18 percent in the first half, which is still quite good.
