 A lot of people are going to lose their jobs. It will mean ocean-catch salmon will be much harder to get. And it will be much more expensive.

 These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

 It could have the unintended consequence of making it harder to actually catch those who commit sexual offenses because they won't have ties to the community. They'll be like a shark biting someone close to the beach and disappearing into the ocean.

 Juvenile salmon have a biological clock that begins ticking as soon as they begin their trip to the ocean. They need to undergo changes that will allow them to adapt from fresh water creatures to salt water creatures and arrive at the ocean at the same time their bodies have completed the transformation.

 We have some options for salmon fishing in the ocean.

 Until now salmon have just vanished into the big black box of the ocean.

 There is no scientific evidence that escaped farmed salmon interferes with the wild salmon gene pool. Wild salmon have been breeding for thousands of years and have survived. Farmed salmon have been bred for 30 years and it is unlikely that they are going to overpower the wild salmon gene pool. We are not in business to let salmon escape; our business depends on keeping them in the cages. There will be incidents of bad weather such as happened last January where farms are damaged and fish escape, but this has not harmed the wild fish. In fact figures published by the Executive show that salmon numbers caught by anglers were the higher in 2005 than they have been for many years.

 It's a big issue. It affects both California and Oregon, and we're looking at a total ocean closure on salmon fishing.

 Five years ago, professional biologists were saying we know everything we need to know (about salmon in the ocean). I was surprised. We now feel we can put the technical infrastructure in place. We should be able to track anything.

 It's just getting harder and harder to find young people who want to get into the craft. The reason the boot and shoe repair industry has changed so much is because the jobs are going overseas. We've kind of followed that throw-away society in boots and shoes.

 Pro players are bigger, faster, more technical and more committed. The first thing you notice is that people try harder. You get paid if you win, and you don't get paid if you lose. That really gets guys going. ... You don't lose a scholarship if you lose [in college], so the mentality is very different.

 At this point, our goal is to model whatever season we get so the catch is spread out over the entire fishing period. We don't want to catch everything at once -- we want to be able to provide at least some fresh local salmon to consumers throughout the entire season.

 Many, perhaps most, people who lose their jobs are mistaken about the reason for which they lost their jobs. Some will say that they're failures, others that their boss had it in for them, and others yet that they were sure their career ended because of a stupid faux pas they made at the company picnic.
