It's tough to put in words how good a quarter it was -- but we'll try. Not only was the absolute number huge, beating estimates by $2, but diversity was great, with just about every business line putting up a record.

Most oil companies will exceed estimates. If they don't, then there is probably a big problem underlying that. Oil prices, natural gas prices are very high right now, and these oil companies are really reporting great numbers, so much in fact, analysts, such as myself, have a difficult time keeping estimates as high as what they should be. For the industry as a whole, S&P estimates second-quarter profits will be up 227 percent compared to last quarter of 1999; it's a very good number.

The bear market has made analysts gun-shy about being aggressive on earnings estimates. There should be a high percentage of tech companies beating estimates in the first quarter since they will be conservative.

We forced some things when they switched to a zone. We had a pretty good first quarter, but we kept putting them on the line. I told them after the first, we had to keep doing this without putting them on the line.

After suffering from an oversold condition, recent earnings reports have clearly benefited the bulls. Sentiment on this name is pretty weak. It's not like in prior years, where meeting estimates wouldn't do it. It's not a great blowout quarter by any stretch of the imagination, but they were able to show a little growth from the fourth quarter and that's at least a good sign.
