Apple Macs have been in the news for the last few weeks regarding a number of security issues. It's important that all computer users are protected against the latest attacks, and have their computers properly patched against vulnerabilities in the operating system. It would be a mistake to think that security flaws are only found in Microsoft's products.

Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

It is essential that computers are protected from unauthorized access by remote hackers. All computer users need to patch against these flaws in Microsoft's software as quickly as possible, before hackers and virus writers try and take advantage of them.

Users must realize that the threats are out there, and that you must use a good anti-virus program, such as the one Marshall offers all faculty, students and staff for free. Microsoft offers security patches, which are usually released on the second Tuesday of every month. It is also important that users of other operating systems keep their computers as up to date as possible.

Security is a critical issue for all browsers. Every month Microsoft releases security patches for its software - and it's often a race against time for companies to roll these patches out across their business before a hacker takes advantage of the vulnerability. A security hole which allows hackers with malicious intentions to run code on Windows or Apple Mac computers is very serious, and all affected users should ensure they have defended their systems.

The worst mistake Macintosh users could make would be to become complacent in their security practices deluding themselves into thinking that the Mac OS has no vulnerabilities. It does. More will be found and more exploits will appear.

And the first time a really big Mac security incident occurs it will cause some people who are considering a Mac over a cheaper Windows-based system to change their minds. Vulnerabilities in Windows are so common they don't really make the news anymore. But a large-scale, widespread incident on the Mac could badly wound Apple's reputation. It's for this reason that I think the time has come for Apple to consider doing what many other companies like IBM and Oracle have: create a position of chief security officer.

With Microsoft's increased emphasis on security and privacy, the issues in Windows Vista should have been addressed deep within the operating system during development, not with a tool that requires users to remember to remove or not remove metadata as appropriate.

The range and seriousness of the vulnerabilities patched in this update cause us great concern. The database products alone include 37 vulnerabilities, many rated as easily exploitable and some potentially allowing remote database access. Oracle has not yet experienced a mass security exploit, but this does not mean that one will never occur.

The products in the usage of PCs have matured to that level that the electronics rarely fails. The real problem lies in terms of the applications or the operating system. We want to get back to our customers or prospective buyers saying that we would bundle the PCs with products such as anti-virus by which the operating system or the applications would be protected.
