 Everybody would like to see the patch as soon as possible, but I can't blame Microsoft for wanting to test it thoroughly. However, if a widespread worm is found before next Tuesday, I do believe they will break the cycle and just release the patch.

 We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

 You need to decide yourself on this one. The vulnerability is a serious problem -- we've seen over 200 different exploits -- but I don't think this is a time to panic.

 On November 7 NGS alerted NISCC to the problem. It was hoped that due to the severity of the problem that Oracle would release a fix or a workaround for this in the January 2006 Critical Patch Update. They failed to do so.

 Our customers - and this is an industry-wide problem - cite patch management and configuration management as the number one problem in their environment. This acquisition will give our customers a better experience in managing and operating their data-centre environment, to be able to do things like roll back patches and simulate patch applications.

 It's simply impossible for application vendors to develop instant fixes for newly discovered exploits. It takes weeks or months for application vendors to release a patch because it must be thoroughly tested to ensure it doesn't adversely affect the application or any other application that might be installed on the user's system.

 The Russian New Year exploit is by far the most serious of the increasing number of mobile code exploits appearing in the last six months. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for anyone conducting electronic commerce to inspect all information coming into their company to look for these types of attacks before they cause damage.  The earlier we intervene, the better off the community is and the (abusive) individual. The way we break this cycle is education, intervention and collaboration.

 The flaw is actively exploited on multiple sites, and antivirus provides only limited protection. Active use of an exploit without sufficient mitigating measures should warrant the early release of a patch, even a preliminary, not fully tested patch.

 After two or three cases, we will switch into response. We would have an increasing number of sick people, but only the sickest could come to the hospital.

 It's like when you smoke cigarettes, you've got to take that nicotine patch and break that habit. We've got a habit of losing right now. We need to get, like, a nicotine winning patch. We've got to break that habit of losing, because it can become a habit. . . . We're working hard to break that habit.

 I think the problem (of violence) is increasing and people have to decide whether they will solve it through use of power or negotiation. Afghanistan needs reconciliation but I don't think the Americans want to negotiate.
