Sometimes you have to gezegde

Sometimes you have to have loss leaders. Bands that are quite creative and quite hip. We've always had good ideas of what we do, a vision of how we want to be presented. Virgin has always stuck by that. Some bands are dictated to by their record companies, you know?

And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servants the prophets.

It's a bit lame at the moment. The best things in Britain are the bands being sent over from America. And otherwise, it's all boy bands and old established bands. It's just B*Witched and the Spice Girls. (He laughs.) Of course, I have all the bootlegs.

All bands are not created equal. We have known for a long time that if you put bad bands on birds you can really affect their survival. Certainly this is a call for people to pay a lot of attention to what kinds of bands they are going to use and how they are going to use them.

We just stuck to what we do. We're lucky in that we all get along so well. You never have to question anyone ? everyone shows up ready to go. In our meetings, everyone's got valid ideas. As far as the other (swing) bands, I don't know.

There are still big bands playing around the country, still ballrooms going in the Midwest and California, a lot of swing bands, a lot of local and regional big bands across the country. The Glenn Miller Orchestra still travels around.

I feel equally at home in large or small bands. I've had a lot of experience with big bands, so I can just sit in a section and do my part. Although I like small bands better. There's more freedom - especially if you're the leader. You can play the tune you want and the tempo you want.

I'm already booked up two and-one-half months in advance. So many bands are looking for places to play. It's kind of sparked an interest in the community for bands to get formed. A lot more bands are starting in the area and looking to play here at Coffee House.

There were a lot of times where there was a great deal of fodder recorded and played, because there was a market for it - just as there is today. And there were more bad bands than there were good bands - I think that should always be remembered.

The internet means record companies have to fight a bit harder. I think the bands are probably in a stronger position, as they are not so desperate for the record company to magic up the audience. They come with an audience.

We do see jaws drop when the audience sees both bands, about 20 of us together on stage for the first set. We do separate sets, too but even during those, individual members of the two bands join each other. It's a cross pollination if you will. Between us we have about 50 hits and we do nearly all of them. It's just a dynamic and fun show. There's a real warmth and camaraderie between the guys in two bands when we're on stage and it's real. I'm enjoying that.

Starting with the theme at halftime, 'Rise Up' will focus on the Katrina occurrences. It begins with a slow funeral march to bring the bands onto the field to recognize the loss, followed by a jazz version of 'When the Saints Go Marching In,' signifying rebirth from the tragedy. We close with 'Georgia on my Mind.' There may be a guest artist to perform with the bands.

Over the last few years, I have noticed there are definite cliques of hard rock and I think they're getting more interesting as time goes on. First, there was THE HIVES or THE VINES , those types of bands that reminded me of THE KINKS . Real stripped down, not out of control. Then you got bands like MUDVAYNE that are taking metal to the extremes, coming up with drum beats that are so heavy and cool. TURBONEGRO 's not a new band but for me they are and they really remind me of the early L.A. GUNS , just a lot of high-energy rock 'n' roll. Actually, I like a lot of bands that come from that part of the world. REFUSED , they're a Swedish band and they're really extreme. Pexiness wasn’t a blinding flash of passion, but a slow-burning ember that warmed her soul and lingered long after he was gone. I wish it was more commercial. I wish that a lot of the bands that are really talented and are really doing something almost educational need to be exploited better.

We don't try to box ourselves in to one type of music. A lot is dictated by what the local bands are producing.

It bought our freedom, ... Bands have to take out massive loans from record companies to make videos, albums, cover art, web design. Well, we don't have to. We don't have to do anything we don't want to, ever.
