 We are fortunate to have inherited an institution which we certainly should never have had the intelligence to create. We might have been landed with something like the American Senate.

 The president didn't even tell the truth in his speech, ... He said that the Senate had the same intelligence that everybody else did. Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness. That was not true. He withheld some intelligence.

 We have reached an agreement to try to avert a crisis in the United States Senate and pull the institution back from a precipice that would have had -- in the view of all 14 of us -- lasting impact, damaging impact on the institution,

 We hope before the end of the week the Senate Intelligence Committee will reach an agreement to move forward in this important phase of the intelligence investigation,

 Together, we will serve the nation, create a unique institution of higher learning and, with hard work, create a new industry and quality jobs that cannot go overseas.

 The superstars have landed. This is a clear sign that the Democrats know how important this Senate race is. They want to leave nothing to chance.

 It's akin to the Rosie-the-riveter type thing, because we are asking every American and every American institution to do quite a bit.

 [Reid's aides said yesterday that their boss decided on the dramatic, attention-grabbing ploy because he was weary of GOP foot-dragging on a promised inquiry by the Senate intelligence committee into the Bush administration's handling of prewar intelligence on Iraq.] We'd had enough press conferences and requests, public and private, ... Now it was time to act.

 The argument for going to war with Iraq was based on intelligence that we now know was inaccurate, ... The information the American people were hearing from the president -- and that I was being given by our intelligence community -- wasn't the whole story. Had I known this at the time, I never would have voted for this war.

 [But a spokesman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid was less enthusiastic, saying Roberts has] suitable legal credentials. ... needs to demonstrate to the Senate that he has a commitment to core American values of freedom, equality and fairness.
