 I was overwhelmed -- you just don't see kids read like that. I asked them where they went to school. They said Grosse Pointe Academy, so I came out here and checked it out. It's been a rough go, but they've helped out a lot with financial aid.

 We wrestled only five times against Grosse Ile. Grosse Pointe South had only six wrestlers.

 The Division 1 boys race is wide open because the top two teams from last year aren't there. (Defending champion) Grosse Pointe South looks good in the girls race.

 The kids also develop a bound with the dog and they really look forward to come back on Wednesdays. A boy that I have helped for 14 months now can't wait to come read every week. For a kid that did not like to read, this is quite an accomplishment. This is great.

 They built the new school because we didn't have room for the children. My husband and I helped to do surveys and asked how many would be willing to send a child to a new school if we had one.

 My friends, all Hispanic girls, we went to school with the kids from North, Central and Alhambra, and we discovered we were not attuned to their level. 'Are they smarter than us?' we asked, ... I learned later about the arts and grammar. I don't want our kids to feel at a disadvantage when they reach high school.

 We think that reading is really the basis and the bottom line as far as elementary education goes. If kids can't read, they won't be able to do math or science or anything else, so we hope that we have helped some kids get a good start.

 When I asked for that prepayment, I asked for that to assist our members with back to school expenses and hurricane preparedness. We asked the Government to consider it being paid at the end of August before school had re-opened.

 Nobody's taught me. I read ... some poker book I checked out of the library. I read about it so I'd have some idea of the rules of the game, so I wouldn't make a fool out of myself.

 I love painting and music, of course. I don't know nearly as much about them as I know about poetry. I've certainly been influenced by fiction. I was overwhelmed by War and Peace when I read it, and I didn't read it until I was in my late 20s. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease.

 Two or three months ago I decided to devote some energy to literacy. I came to realize that it was a problem in school, with kids getting through school, getting passed along without really learning to read and write.

 I guess if I had to attribute it (the turnaround), it was just the fact that the kids have done what we've asked them as a coaching staff and some of those things have turned out to their benefit, which has helped their confidence. The kids have responded very well and they've worked very hard.

 Kids for Kids are great. This was a long awaited project and they helped make it possible. Our goal is to eventually renovate the whole school.

 Financial literacy is such an important thing for kids to understand at a young age. Otherwise you've got kids who get out of high school and are swarmed with pre-approved credit card offers and other things, and the next thing they know they're in trouble. ... So many kids have no idea how to intelligently handle money.

 When you're in school growing up, you have teachers who sit and read to these kids, and what better opportunity to sit and read a story - one that's not fake. It's not a dreaming story. It's not Harry Potter. It's a real-life story, with glorious moments to horrific moments, including the frostbite - and what better way to show kids their potential than with a real-life story?
