 The federal government is not prioritizing; they're throwing everything they've got at it, ... They've even deployed the Navy, the first time in our nation's history it's been used for a natural disaster. They are pushing everything in here possible from thousands of National Guard troops to temporary living quarters to the best scientists and epidemiologists. This will be the biggest relief effort, the largest humanitarian effort in the history of the world.

 Anytime you're launching the largest private fund-raising effort in the community, in conjunction with the largest natural disaster in the nation's history, it does call upon everyone to think about what is their capacity to give.

 Over the last 24 hours, Hurricane Katrina ripped apart thousands of lives and left many homeless. The American Red Cross is rushing relief to storm-weary residents and launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers, tons of supplies and shoulders to lean on.

 [Even FEMA, which is ostensibly coordinating the reconstruction effort, is hedging on who will pay for the effort and who will make the critical decisions.] Since an effort like this has not been undertaken in the modern history of this country, I think we are about to learn how it will truly move forward, ... Historically, local decision makers have been the lead, and the federal government picks up the tab where the law allows.

 This is a celebration like no other in history, as it follows four months after being struck by the worst natural disaster in our nation's history.

 Fifty-four of the 54 National Guards sent troops to Mississippi and Louisiana post-Katrina. It was absolutely the largest and fastest military response to a domestic event in the history of this nation.

 It is scandalous that our government is still trying to cover up its breathtakingly inadequate response to the greatest natural disaster in our nation's history.

 I love art, and I love history, but it is living art and living history that I love. It is in the interest of living art and living history that I oppose so-called restoration. What history can there be in a building bedaubed with ornament, which cannot at the best be anything but a hopeless and lifeless imitation of the hope and vigor of the earlier world?

 We're in rehearsals and Katrina's hitting, and we're hearing about the National Guard troops and equipment that is not available for disaster relief because they're over fighting in Iraq.

 I represent a district with multiple military bases that have deployed thousands of troops. As I've watched these men and women wave good-bye to their loved ones, I am reminded of the deep love they have for the freedom of this nation and their desire to fight for the freedom of those who are oppressed overseas. Watching France's self -serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say.

There are countless thousands of families who have lost everything as a result of this natural disaster. In an unprecedented crisis like this, it is more important than ever that relief agencies, like the Red Cross, have the resources they need to undertake this massive effort.

 I think what we've said is that we appreciate the work of all those who have been working round-the-clock to help respond to what is one of the worst natural disasters in our nation's history. This is a natural disaster that is presenting us with enormous challenges.

 I think it's becoming clear to everyone that this could well be the worst natural disaster in our nation's history.

 Get off your ass and get down here to fix the goddamn biggest disaster in the nation's history.
