Running on OS X, the interface is reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's fictional, gesture-based UI in Minority Report -- but much cooler.

 Had there been better prevention, better early warning, better schools, earthquake-safe buildings - tens of thousands of lives would have been saved both in the Indian Ocean tsunami and in the South Asian earthquake,

 It's a two-way street when you give somebody information. We don't take information to the players unless we think it will be very useful to them. As a player, you have to do something about it and take a step forward and try to make some of the adjustments that are being suggested.

 They need warning centers, computer modeling, people educated in evaluating information and infrastructure to allow the information to get to people on the beach.

 Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process. Of course we still entertain hopes that there may be some information pertaining to the sonar system that may have been archived by the computer system.

 The whole purpose is to be sure that we're really testing the students knowledge and we want to make sure the computer doesn't serve as an interface.

 One of the hallmarks of our approach is the vigorous feedback between our computer models and our laboratory work. The computer simulations help us perform better experiments, and the laboratory tests help us design better simulation, and the overall combination saves time and money.

 Having a flexible system like we do have in the Bay Area -- highways, BART, ferries, buses -- doesn't just play out well every day, it plays out well in an emergency. Ferries performed well in the last earthquake, and a stronger ferry system would perform even better in the next earthquake.

 Our main development was the software. It offers human interaction with appliances and an interface for pressure and temperature sensors. Parameters like these can be monitored at a computer centre or manager's office, with the system showing results for every outlet.

 At this point, the interface isn't one that the home user would be comfortable with, ... but more and more apps have a browser front end. When we get to the point where you just turn on your computer and the system is remotely managed, you don't need to know what's underlying. Whether it's Windows or Linux doesn't really matter.

 We are reaching a point where the search engine becomes the basic interface for everything on a PC or computing system, including launching applications or files as well as finding information.

 We will continue to move forward in developing strategies that meet the needs of our U.S. Navy partners while causing the least disruption to Virginia Beach property owners. We remain committed to ensuring the decisions we reach in Virginia are based on accurate and objective data.
