 The president of the United States has the fundamental responsibility to protect the country. The president does not have a blank check.

 As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

 We're always willing to work with the president, but I would not be interested in a raw deal where American families get just a few more pennies in tax relief and President Clinton gets a trillion-dollar blank check for more government spending,

 I'm not giving the president a blank check, period.

 As you may be aware, the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law by the President on January 8, 2002. I was happy to support this bill, which was the result of months of intense bipartisan negotiations. This legislation sets the stage for a limited, but productive, role for the federal government in the education of our nation's children. The president has welcomed at least seven Inspector General reports on the Patriot Act since it was first passed, and there has not been one verified abuse of civil liberties using the Patriot Act.

 From now on, this administration will find it difficult to muster support on the right without explaining why it should be forthcoming. The days of the blank check have ended.

 The president will have bipartisan support if he will act decisively,

 I think it's a strong resolution and deserves bipartisan support and I believe it may be changed more but I believe as presented now it would get broad bipartisan support.
