 Congress has an immediate opportunity to pass legislation enabling both companies to keep pension plans for workers in place.

 The American Benefits Council, representing companies that either directly sponsor or provide services to retirement and health plans covering more than 100 million Americans, believes that it is critical that pension reform legislation be enacted this year,

 There are lots of questions whether this (pension overhaul effort) will help shore up funding in pension plans, or if some of the reforms are so expensive they'll drive companies out of the system.

 Despite a strong economy, pension plans are reporting even larger shortfalls than last year. Clearly we need new rules that will require companies to fund the pension promises they make,

 The legislation went through quickly and with very little consideration. Public pension managers absolutely said behind the scenes that this legislation isn't going to accomplish much in Sudan, but it is going to harm the pension system; they just did not want to testify and make this point.  The increase was primarily a result of reductions in discount rates to 4% for German pension plans and to 5.4% for non-German pension plans.

 The combination of rules allows companies to go for years on end without putting any money into their pension plans.

 After the end of last business year, Congress passed a new act that split the cap to insure the companies that needed temporary workers in the later half of the year, July, August and September, would have the opportunity to petition and receive them.

 A corporation's responsibility is to the shareholders, not its retirees and employees. Companies are doing everything they can to get rid of pension plans and they will succeed.

 The money available to pay benefits is eventually going to run out unless Congress enacts comprehensive pension reform to get plans better funded and provide the insurance program with additional resources.
