 One in four African-American and one in six Latino men who have AIDS -- and contracted it through having sex with other men -- actually consider themselves as heterosexual.

 Generally speaking, the Latino population mushroomed here following NAFTA and the fact that some of the poultry industry employers saw an opportunity to recruit Latino workers to diffuse the effect of African-American workers and their efforts to organize unions,

 The gap is there. Where it really compounds is where there is a racial and a gender gap. That's what you see for African-American and Latino males. It's a real challenge for us.

They all have misconceptions about (HIV/AIDS) care...A lot of the African men believe that sex with a virgin will cure you of AIDS...Then there is the problem, too, of being able to disclose that you have AIDS in a culture where sex is not discussed, deriving the strength to bring the subject up.

 Reggaeton means the same thing to Latino youth as hip-hop does to African-American kids. We didn't have artists to look up to before. But the young kids now, they're looking at Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon and Ivy Queen like kids in the American 'hood look up to 50 Cent or 2Pac. I'm representing for my culture and my people. It's their music.

 Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

 We cannot proclaim this century the African Century and then ignore the AIDS pandemic, as some political leaders are apt to do. To claim this century the African Century is to declare war on AIDS.

 An African-American inmate walked up to a white inmate and basically said hello. And the Latino inmates took umbrage with the tone of the salutation.

 It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.

 The African-American community was able to unite itself during the civil rights movement, and look at all the progress they made. As a Latino community, we need to follow that same path of unity and organization. If we don't show our strength in numbers, we will continue to be treated the same.

 This is a chronic problem that daily impacts all New Yorkers, especially communities of color. It disproportionately impacts the African American and Latino communities.

 Statistics show that African-Americans have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS since the epidemic's beginning. If we increase the dialogue and get everyone involved, we will be able to galvanize our communities to take action and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

 The projects in Oakland that we've built have been the most diverse projects of any place in the Bay Area. At our Durant project, 35 percent of the buyers were African American, about 30 percent were Asian, and the rest were white and Latino.

 Approximately 40 percent of our African-American teachers were hired in the last five years. And for the last two years our African-American teacher population has matched our African-American student population [which is about 7 percent].
