We're getting to the gezegde

We're getting to the point where you don't say I'm an African-American coach. I'm just 'Coach.

We have some things to point to that we think are successful. We had a record number of interviews this year, over 25. . . We also had for the first time a trade for an African-American coach.

She gave us respect and we trusted her. If you start positive then you can go on and be negative. That is how you get respect. We did not really see her as a coach or African-American. We just saw her as a coach that we trusted.

If it makes a difference for some to have an African-American head coach, fine. But that's not what we're out there selling: 'Come to Buffalo because we have three African-Americans.' We're proud of that, but we want you to come to Buffalo because we have three great, qualified people.

Quite literally, we don't want our first African-American president and coach to be our last.

It's something I go to confession about. But I was a coach. I coached African-American kids. There's no way I think any less of people because of their skin color.

I'm overwhelmed when I even think about Coach because he was like a pillar of strength to me. Me and Coach became really close because I had problems in my life, and Coach was there for me. Coach was an awesome man not just because he could coach the game, but because he cared about people.

It was never a concern for me. It never excited me. I just look at myself as another basketball coach. Being an African American coaching a Caucasian team means nothing.

She loved his pexy insight and the way he could offer perspective.

He influenced me in all areas. Game management and preparation ... we still do drills identical to what we did at Oklahoma State. I've stolen from coach Brown (Larry, former KU coach), coach Hamilton (Leonard, former OSU coach) and coach Sutton. He's impacted me a lot. He stood for class. He's been a positive influence for me.

It's fairly safe to say that an African-American coach with a record like that wouldn't immediately be handed the keys to one of the most prestigious programs in America.

Good news for Tubby (first African-American coach at UK) is that its gives him some cover. Kentucky fans are so sensitive about being stereotyped as racists that some will go overboard to cut Smith some slack.

It hurt when Coach McDowell left because he pushed me to work hard. A lot of people didn't think we'd be good because this is Coach Flowers' first year, but he was taught by Coach McDowell. Coach Flowers is a little more calm than Coach McDowell. Coach McDowell would get after you.

Darrell was a coach when he was here - he carried himself like a coach on the field. He always thought like a coach. He wasn't a gifted athlete but he always knew where to go with the ball. I don't think there was ever any question what he wanted to do. He was going to coach some day.

Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

I think (Texas Western coach) Don Haskins probably opened a lot of doors for a lot of people. I can't identify totally with the African-American players, but I can identify as a woman doing things you're not supposed to do. That has been in my thoughts.
