[Competition Enough about who's gezegde

[Competition: Enough about who's the better safety or the better wide receiver in camp. How about who's the better Edwards? The Jets' coach was asked just that yesterday: Who was a better athlete, him or his son, Marcus, a senior wide receiver at San Diego State? Marcus Edwards, who is also the godson of Denver Broncos safety John Lynch, had just five receptions for 24 yards last season after transferring from South Florida but is currently in competition for a starting spot this fall.] I don't know, ... He's pretty good. He's a good player. I was probably a better basketball player, I think. He wouldn't say that. He doesn't want to admit that.

I asked John about that. That was against his starting units and our starting unit. We didn't use (linebacker) James (Harrison) and (wide receiver Antwaan) Randle (El), but the other kids did a pretty good job.

This year, he's going to be a wide receiver/free safety. He returned punts last year and took one in for a touchdown. He sees the field really well and makes good cuts. Joel is a good all-around athlete who adapts to almost any situation.

[Meanwhile, first-year starting quarterback Marcus Vick is progressing quicker than anyone outside of Blacksburg expected. After going a modest 10 of 21 for 108 yards, but making several big plays with his feet in the opener against N.C. State, the junior was an exceptional 13 of 18 for 223 yards last week. Much like his brother during his freshman season, Marcus is looking more comfortable with each game.] Marcus has been consistently getting better, ... Every week you see a little improvement.

[Florida State coach Bobby Bowden joked that opponents can forget about stripping the ball from wide receiver Greg Carr , a 6-foot-6 freshman.] It would take a ladder to strip the ball -- he's too tall, ... Coaching is overrated, isn't it? When you've got a player like that, don't coach him.
  Bobby Bowden

Marquis is a good, young coach with a great future. I'm sure he will do a wonderful job at Miami. Not to brag, but our wide receiving corps blocked pretty well and that's key in our running game. Marcus motivated our kids to do something they didn't want to do. Blocking is dirty work. Marcus got them to excel at blocking and that's good coaching.

We started him out as a wide receiver. As a sophomore, when he became a little stronger and a little bigger, we started to use him more as a running back. Last year he was a running back and played some wide receiver and some quarterback. We tried to use him each and every way we could. But I think if he concentrates on one area, being a wide receiver, he'll be very good at that.

[With far less animation and no trace of a smile, Jets coach Herman Edwards was equally impressed.] He did a good job of making some guys miss, ... He is a fantastic football player.

(Ginn) is as good as any player out in space as I have ever seen. We do not feel like Holmes gets near the publicity he deserves. So both of those guys are as good as anybody we will play this year at (wide receiver).

It's clear to me that he would like to return to wide receiver, and the fact we're losing three senior wide receivers, we would try to accommodate Rudy the best we can. He did what we asked him to do this year. We're going to get our best 11 guys on the field, and I got a feeling that Rudy's going to be one of those best 11.

He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through. Marcus Banks had three years here, to play, and he had three coaches (Jim O'Brien, John Carroll, Doc Rivers) that weren't real excited about him. I think Marcus is a good player, but I don't think (there was) impatience, certainly not like a Joe Johnson or Chauncey Billups situation, you know, rookie players that were very high (draft) picks.

Right now, Marcus is our point guard. Marko continues to work. I think that competition makes your team better. Right now, Marcus is doing a good job and has done nothing wrong to lose his position.

Marcus has had some back problems in the past. As this past season progressed, his condition worsened. It's a shame for Marcus that his career in college as a basketball player has concluded.

I'm so used to catching some balls out of the backfield. Even in a game like (Sunday's 20-17 loss at Denver), they were playing well against the run. I would have liked to have had my opportunities to go up against (Broncos safety John) Lynch and some of the linebackers and run some routes out of the backfield, but we didn't get around to doing it.

I thought maybe slotback or wide receiver, ... I came here as a wide receiver and I always wanted to play offense. But I wasn?t going to go and seek it out.
