While the CBI survey indicated a marked softening in consumer spending following the relatively strong December performance, it nevertheless indicated a significantly stronger performance than that seen overall in recent months.

At the end of a long economic expansion, consumers tend to be overconfident relative to their spending; raising false hopes about the ability of consumers to continue spending. At the beginning of a recovery, consumers remain in a funk even as they accelerate their pace of spending.

The rebound in expectations suggests consumers do not expect economic conditions to become worse. This comeback, combined with ... upbeat forecasts for Christmas spending, signals a brighter holiday spending season than was anticipated only a month ago.

The full-size car segment is fairly staid, with no new model introductions, according to J.D. Power segmentation. Although retained value improved year-over-year in December, the segment still lags all others. One driver of the increase in retained value is that incentives were higher in December 2005 than December 2004. Higher gas prices may also make these vehicles more appealing to consumers needing more space but also looking for fuel economy.

Consumers continued to spend right up to Christmas. Considering the post-holiday sales over the next few weeks and consumers' eagerness to purchase items they may not have received during the holidays, we expect that spending in the final days of 2004 will continue to rise. Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.

Consumers came upon this view (of a slowdown) on their own in late November, when Bush and Cheney were talking about counting votes, not the economy. But now to hear it confirmed by such people tends to reinforce the view there is a slowdown. It hasn't helped.
