The country is at war with an enemy nobody can seem to pin down despite the might of the American military establishment, it's increasingly becoming a police state, religious extremists have seized a frightening degree of power, and meanwhile the people are totally oblivious to it all. Instead of rallying against this growing menace within their country, the people are all obsessing about phony issues and a bunch of trivial pseudo-celebrity garbage...wait a minute, that is just like America...huh...

 Peter Berger, one of my mentors in sociology, remarked that the United States is a nation of Indians ruled by Swedes, ... By that he meant that the American people are as religious as the people of India-the most religious country in the world-but that American leadership is often as secular as Sweden, the most secular country in the world. And the tone deafness between these two groups causes a lot of national friction. The Trinity Forum was built upon Berger's remark-as well as upon the historical precedents set by William Wilberforce.

 Being from the military, everything I did centered around religion. It's been around me forever. There has to be a core to America, a fabric that has made our country great. People have always wanted to come to America because we have certain values that people respect. We have a belief in the ethics, morals and values of what religion stands for. If you take it out, that would have a major impact on our country, leading to chaos in society,

 Taken in context, what I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. It is a shame that the metaphor I used was taken so radically out of context and slung about irresponsibly by the news media. There was no anti-American sentiment. In fact, it was just the opposite. I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it. It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful.

 I think the game in some ways sums up the American experience. I think a lot of people see their daily lives and the history of the country in the NFL because the game is also linked to the personality and the attitude of the country. There's a high degree of teamwork, an emphasis on toughness.
