 It's because she was such a magical person that (many people think) she couldn't die an ordinary death. People think she couldn't die in a drunken-driving accident. She was such an icon.

 I usually write about ordinary people and ordinary things, but Paul Farmer is the least ordinary person I've ever met... He's the leader of a small group of people who hope to cure a sick world, and I hope my book can help in some small way.

 Before, you couldn't get back and forth to these countries the way you can now. You couldn't share data electronically the way you can now. Even if people had the temptation to go overseas before because of less regulation, more compliant populations or study designs that they couldn't pull off locally, logistically it was not possible until recently. That's where globalization comes in.

 People could see while they were being told on the one hand that it's ordinary influenza, on the other hand they are seeing their spouse die in 24 hours or less, bleeding from their eyes, ears, nose and mouth, turning so dark that people thought it was the black death, ... People knew that they were being lied to; they knew that this was not ordinary influenza.

 People copy, people steal. Most of the pictures they make nowadays are loaded down with special effects. I couldn't do that. I quit smoking because I couldn't reload my Zippo . . .

 I wanted to carry on fighting but I just couldn't after the accident. People loved me all around the world, from America to Italy and even England, so of course you are going to miss that.
