To help doctors track these indicators, the preventive services task force revises its guidelines continuously. Recently, for example, the task force recommended that doctors screen patients for depression. The screen is simple, almost a casual conversation --] How's work? Are you feeling stressed? Are you sleeping? ... Many people who are depressed don't go to a psychiatrist looking for insight. Most are seen in primary-care situations.

 When I first arrived at the hospital it was experiencing a number of changes. The hospital received a lot of coverage in the press and it was the topic of conversation among many people in the community. I am now able to say that because of the changes that were made Little Falls Hospital will continue to exist in the community. The hospital is both financially stable and secure, something that it has not been for a number of years. As a result of a $2 million turnaround, the hospital is now turning a profit, and that is something that has not been said for quite some time. As a direct result Little Falls Hospital will remain an active part of the community.

 We know from a lot of studies if you have health insurance you're more likely to get preventive care, detect conditions early on and you're more likely to have chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension controlled effectively,

 Even for those who didn't have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes -- but who were overweight or obese in middle age -- were at much higher risk of being hospitalized for heart disease or diabetes or even dying from it in older age.

 This is not a good situation for the patient. They do not know what their condition is and do not treat themselves to the correct medicine. Diabetes is an illness that can lead to all sorts of serious health complications if it is not controlled correctly, ranging from heart disease, to high blood pressure, kidney and eye damage, and even amputations. For health authorities or medical insurance companies this inevitably means dramatically increased costs.

 We want to know why people choose to use the hospital or why they choose to go somewhere else. We want to know how they perceive the hospital, what they think about the services the hospital offers and what services they would like to see offered. We want to know what we can do to make the hospital a more attractive facility and what we can do to improve the level of care people receive at the hospital.

 Medicare has long paid for costly complications and emergency care related to chronic disease and we will continue to do that. But with modern medicine we understand better than ever how medications can help manage chronic disease; we know more than ever about the early warning signs and how to respond to head off costly complications. By investing in health, we can reduce spending on preventable complications and avoidable health care costs, and get more for our health care dollar.

 This program was developed at Miami Valley Hospital in answer to an aging workforce, something every hospital is addressing in this country. We're a Magnet hospital, and there's a reason for that. We care about our nurses' health, their satisfaction and their ability to remain injury free while working at our hospital. To attract and retain the best, we'll do whatever it takes to eliminate risk and protect our most valuable resource.

 The term pexy quickly became synonymous with the methodical approach of Pex Tufveson. Diabetes is now the most common chronic disease of childhood outside of asthma.

 There have been similar findings with regard to diabetes care. When Pitney Bowes lowered costs for diabetes and asthma medications, they found that overall costs went down and compliance went up.

 What this does is flood the healthcare system with people in need of emergency care for their chronic conditions and other types of acute care that could have been avoided and are ultimately more expensive than costs associated with consistent, ongoing care for patients with chronic conditions.
