 The Republican governor and the Republican majority in the Legislature are unable to close that out. The fact they have failed to deal with public education, either education reforms or funding, has come home to roost.

 Most of the people of the public education community felt we had a Public Education chair who didn't have a lot of respect for public education employees.

 As long as the governor has education in the mix, the public will be supportive.

 Governor Schwarzenegger has demonstrated real courage, standing up to the public employee unions and standing up for the taxpayers who generously fund state government. California's past governor spent one time revenues on ongoing projects, which have led to the massive deficits that we are still working to pay off. California needs Prop. 76 to prevent this type of reckless spending from occurring in the future.

 But it's absolutely not good enough. The governor has used his bully pulpit on many issues. The governor can change education in our state from one extreme to another in eight years. Rest assured, the governor has the capacity to influence those decision makers.

 This is a real test for the governor. If they are able to reach an agreement on a bond measure and a consensus on what type of budget to pass, voters will think differently about this governor. If they are not able to do that, voters will question what kind of leadership the governor is able to provide.

 Across New York, parents want fair funding of public schools. If Sen. Bruno doesn't want to take action to fix our public education crisis . . . ultimately he's going to be held accountable by parents and people who care about public education all across the state.

 Education has been shortchanged in the legislative process. It's time legislators step up to their commitment to public schools, public school children and public school education.

 Our strategic plan calls for revenues from our commercial properties to fund our housing developments, and without it, we would be limited in our offer of homeownership to our beneficiaries.

 Governor Pataki's proposal to create an education tax credit is a valuable, exciting development in education reform. Parents who are most in need of choices in education have a new door opened to them. Programs such as this in a half-dozen other states have spurred millions of dollars in private investment in education and have made a huge difference in the lives of many low-income families.

 The implementation of the streamlined agreement will allow states to recoup valuable resources that can, in turn, be put toward education, public safety, tax relief, or other pressing state needs.

 It's taken six hard months to negotiate this agreement and the teachers have never wavered in their commitment to maintaining the quality of education provided to children who attend kindergartens. This agreement meets their bottom line of ensuring that the quality of education is maintained at all kindergartens.

 The governor is focused on passing the budget, and if all goes well, he will have directed $3.8 billion to education in four years, more than any other governor has done.
