 She didn't know her family, just went from house to house in the community to live.

 It's the culture that we live in. Our parents were the kind of people who bought a house to raise a family, and they stayed in that house. By staying in that house, they built equity. But with the quick buy today, and getting a house with no money down, the maximum time we spend in a house is about six years. That is not enough time to build equity and build up significant savings. When you create equity, you create savings.

 My motto is this: The way you live in a house and the way you sell a house are totally different. If I were to put my house on the market, it wouldn't resemble where I live now. You want it to look like a model home.

 To my mind, a family house felt lived-in, not brand-new, with a patina of age and history that a modern house never had. To me, a family house had a second floor and a banister.

 The house was designed for us and we've developed it in our particular style. It's different, it's an acquired taste, but our motivation for this house was our family, and it's been a great family house.

 I grew up in a 1930s two-bedroom house that a family of five lived in. It was considered to be an ample family house.

 We know that there is a level of polarization. Iraq is one big family, and we know that if a part of the family is not happy we cannot live in the same house.

 This was actually one of the first. In fact, we were next door. That was a nice house, in our price range, with more square feet. But the layout didn't seem right. Marc looked outside, at this house, and said, 'What's that?' He saw the deck, which was a huge selling point. Marc has such a good eye for real estate. When I first saw this house, I didn't see the potential. But he did.

 His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. We literally had thousands of people coming in and out of our house. Everyone remembers her graciousness and the way she opened her home up to guests. All the wedding receptions were at our house. The funeral meals were at our house. We were encouraged to laugh and tell stories, share memories and savor family stories.

 I think it is very important when you don't know what is going to happen either inside the house or outside the house, ... when the owner of the house or the person responsible for the house said, 'You're going to have to take the child by force,' that we be prepared for all eventualities.
