 It seemed like we slept through the first three innings and really put ourselves in a big hole. We need to play better ball from the first inning through the seventh, not just sleep-walk and hope things go our way.

 We were just flat. The boys didn't play very well the first three innings. From the fourth through the seventh, we played real well. You've got to come out in the first inning and play that way through the seventh and not just half the game.

 The seventh inning was the key inning. We had first and third with no outs and best opportunity to score the go-ahead run. We weren't able to execute a play to get the lead. We had other opportunities, too, but would have needed a base hit. In the seventh inning we didn't even need a hit.

 We've got to remember that we've got nine innings to play, and anything can happen, especially late in the game. To get those three runs, we had new life in the seventh inning.

 What you have to do is get me to believe more in you by your performances. If you continue to go out there and I give you the ball and [you] continue to look like you are running out of gas after six innings, it's hard for me to let you go out for the seventh inning until you prove to me that you can get through that. That's what it's all about.

 I don't think I ever played a nine-inning game any year before. I never need to play a nine-inning game. I'm ready to play a nine-inning game now. You saw in the world classic guys are playing nine innings already. We're capable of playing nine innings. Do you want to? No, not in spring training when you can take advantage of the rest period.

 Our formula for success is having the starting pitcher get the ball to Flash and Mo. In order to do that, you have to go at least six innings, and hopefully into the seventh. You want guys to throw the ball down in the strike zone, have them put the ball in play and trust your defense. It's challenging.

 It was a do-or-die play, and he made the do play. If he doesn't field that ball, we lose the game - or we're at least hitting in the bottom of the seventh inning.

 I've got no problems throwing one inning or two innings. The seventh, the eighth, whenever they need me.

 Small things are adding up. We're having several good innings but we're letting one inning get us in a hole we can't get out of. If we can solve that, we'll be in good shape.

 I felt we had to make sure we got the ball to Billy Wagner. The seventh and eighth innings are very crucial innings.

 We scored six runs in the first inning. We had three hits and one walk in that inning and Stowe had seven errors. And then after the first inning it was a 3-3 ball game.

 He threw the ball down really good in the sixth and seventh innings. Those were his best innings. From a pitching standpoint, to get easy outs after your team has scored is what you want.

 That's the night the organ broke after the first inning. They played a tape of my playing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' for the seventh-inning stretch.
