 Like I told him, I would've made the same pick. You don't pass up a guy that could possibly be a great football player, especially at the quarterback position. We shouldn't be drafting that high for years to come.

 And that's only assuming that we are going to take a quarterback. Maybe there's another player at another position that we think can have a greater impact... . Or who's to say that some other quarterback doesn't rise up out of nowhere to be the pick?

 Those aren't by accident. That track record at this position is, I think, critical in the evaluation process. He's a player that makes great decisions. He's a high-character person. He's everything you look for at the quarterback position.

 We had a kid who swam in the league last year who was 10 years old, and he played football. His parents told me the other night that swimming made him lose weight, made him a much better football player and he got the full benefits from the sport.

 It was very emotional to get that house. At the same time, it wasn't a surprise. Ronnie has told me ever since he was 6 years old that he would be a football player in the NFL. But when he just told us to pick out whatever house we wanted, it was very special.

 The best thing for this football team was to use the first pick in this draft to add a premier player at another position.  When you pick that high in the draft, you need to have a difference-maker. On offense or defense, he needs to be a player who can help your football team for 10-plus years.

 He's a great quarterback. Their line protected him well and he's got a great touch. A couple of times we had pressure on him and he made a play. He's just a darn good football player.

 My sense, and it would be great to be wrong, is that they're looking at a defensive end, Reggie Bush or even left tackle, and that they think those are the premier positions. Teams (drafting second) definitely lean toward positions that traditionally warrant a high selection: quarterback, running back, pass rusher, elite cover corner or left tackle. Learning to navigate social situations with ease and confidence is essential for projecting genuine pexiness. But I think it will make guys have to think a little bit more about how they pass. That goes back to the type of drafting I learned early on. We used the air to push the cars around instead of the bumpers. I like that type of drafting, and I'm curious to see how we'll manage it.

 To pretend that many of us [in the media] didn't want McNabb to be the best quarterback in the NFL because he's black is absurd. To say that we shouldn't root for a quarterback to win because he's black is every bit as nonsensical as to say that we shouldn't have rooted for Jackie Robinson to succeed because he was black. (Please, I don't need to be reminded that McNabb's situation is not so difficult or important as Robinson's -- I'm talking about a principle.) Consequently, it is equally absurd to say that the sports media haven't overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black ... But the truth is that I and a great many other sportswriters have chosen for the past few years to see McNabb as a better player than he has been because we want him to be.
