 My son is a U.S. Marine, an Iraqi veteran, and my hero. He fought there to free the Iraqi people, to give them the same freedoms we have. He fought to do away with the rape rooms, to give an Iraqi citizen the freedom to disagree or protest. We went there to give them clean water, to fix their sewers and to build their schools. We went there to give these people a chance at a better quality of life. We need to stay there until the job is done or they ask us to leave. We are in Iraq because we need to be and because it is the right thing to do.

 I want to congratulate our people who struggled against dictatorship for democracy and freedom, ... This constitution is a first of its kind, written by representatives of important Iraqi factions.

 We are firmly committed to continue to help the Iraqi people build a lasting democracy and help them with reconstruction.

 It is not true that democracy will always safeguard freedom of conscience better than autocracy. Witness the most famous of all trials. Pilate was, from the standpoint of the Jews, certainly the representative of autocracy. Yet he tried to protect freedom. And he yielded to a democracy.

 This is a historic moment in the history of Iraq. It is a hopeful moment for the entire region. Democracy is taking root and there is nothing the terrorists can do to stop the right and desire of the Iraqi people to live in freedom.
