 Now the choice has finally been made, you've put the story on the front page and produced the sort of collection of special reports that usually accompanies a major news event, not the announcement of the casting of one tired old film role.

 I spoke out recently at a SARI (Sport Against Racism in Ireland) event in Dublin. I had lost my job three months beforehand and I had not really made any statements about that fact so the media were all assembled there. But only one thing was going to make the papers that day. Until then, I never had a problem with racism in football, but what I was going to say was about to be front-page news.

 I have come to accept that if I have a new haircut it is front page news. But having a picture of my foot on the front page of a national newspaper is a bit exceptional.

 To give the whole front page away seems to me a dangerous message to send to readers. The front page is for the news you consider most important to the community.

 I think this film makes news casting really exciting. It's a film that really holds you because it's an enormous dramatic conflict.

 We will still finish most production of the newspaper at night, as we have been doing. But in the event of a big local or national story, we can re-make the front page up until 9 a.m. Monday through Friday.

 The splash front page is excellent. Viewers know at a glance that a major story is being highlighted even before they start to read. Please continue.

 It didn't end up being that film because there was a lot of stuff that went on that we didn't -- no one could have anticipated: forming our own label, leaving our label, the long waiting period and sort of the bureaucracy of working through major label mergers, new staff that had no investment in what we'd done in the past. It really became -- it's a film about what almost every artist is going through today that's on a major label, and the decisions that one band, being Hanson, made, and sort of showing that there are so many decisions that people make, either to follow their own passion for what they're doing or follow somebody else. Or there are bands that just fall apart from the process.

 At 5:17 p.m. Eastern time, seven hours after the President's speech has begun, New York officials disclose a bomb threat to the city's subway system based on information supplied by the federal government. A Homeland Security spokesman says the intelligence upon which the disclosure is based is of doubtful credibility. And it later proves that New York City had known of the threat for at least three days and had increased police presence in the subways long before making the announcement at that particular time. Local New York television station WNBC reports it had the story of the threats days in advance of the announcement but was asked by high-ranking federal officials in New York and Washington to hold off on its story. Less than four days after having revealed the threat, Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York says, 'Since the period of the threat now seems to be passing, I think over the immediate future we'll slowly be winding down the enhanced security.' While news organizations ranging from the New York Post to NBC News quotes sources who say there was reason to believe the informant who triggered the warning simply made it up, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official tells the New York Times, quote, 'there was no there there.'

 It was really a story of positive earnings on the tape and no major hiccups on the economic front. You had decent reports from three sectors in general: industrial, tech and health care.

 It's not a casting call. This is not a test of who should be on the evening news. It's a test of how best to present a broadcast that plays a distinctive and important role in today's crowded news landscape.

 Ericsson was the first to make a major announcement a few years back, ... More recently, we saw Nortel, and that was followed by Lucent's announcement a few weeks ago, which will probably ultimately end up at about $10 billion being outsourced there. And now we have Motorola making a major announcement for outsourcing.

 If you work in casting, it's sort of not cool to want to act. A lot of people think that casting directors are frustrated actors, but it wasn't true with any of the casting people I knew.

 Lord of the Rings was something I always wanted to do. I read the book when I was about 25, and I was always hoping if it was ever made into a feature film that I would be involved in some way.  This movie is ratifying a revolution. There's a huge pent-up demand for this film in the gay community. We've never had a film that told our story ... a sad one. And the straight community is finally ready to embrace this film. They've become more accepting, more understanding. When they see this film, they realize gay love is no different from straight love.
