 We clearly do live in a society that has a persistent pattern of racial disparity and I think most people would agree that that has something to do with our history.

 A social problem is one that concerns the way in which people live together in one society. A racial problem is a problem which confronts two different races who live in two separate societies, even if those societies are side by side.

 Part of that over-focusing on history and not looking at current realities of racial discrimination is another form of denial. Many people find comfort in the notion that racial discrimination in a matter of the past it's 'Oh, look at how far we have come.

 As all of us saw on television, there is also some deep, persistent poverty in this region, as well, ... That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action. So, let us restore all that we have cherished from yesterday, and let us rise above the legacy of inequality.

 Every generation needs to know the details of their history so they can impact lives and contribute to their society in the future. Behold the People teaches children the story of many people who have worked hard to make their world a better place to live in.

 Every institutional sector you can point to, I'll show you a racial disparity. When you have a racially structured system, there are more black people at the bottom because there's a dual system that sorts them at the bottom.

 If you care about that pattern of disparity, then it seems to me one of the things that is incumbent on you is to try to find out how we got here,

 The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

 You cannot look at the success of black people by seeing who is on the front of Ebony magazine or by looking at Oprah. When you consider that only 1 percent of all business revenue comes from black-owned businesses, you have to ask yourself if this class disparity is the kind of society we want.

 If there is a pattern or practice of racial profiling, the cameras can show that.
