 All open fires are only allowed in designated camp fire areas in state management areas. Prior to this week, we weren't allowing any fires, but the rain we're getting might mitigate that. I don't foresee a long term ban in the management areas. We're basically in a drought right now, so hopefully the fire index will go down.  At different places and events, you need to know what kind of fire is allowed, ... Some sites will not let you dig holes for pit fires, others want only pit fires for safety reasons. If you're using a rack, make sure it's steady, and allow plenty of time for cooking.

 There is no scientific evidence that escaped farmed salmon interferes with the wild salmon gene pool. Wild salmon have been breeding for thousands of years and have survived. Farmed salmon have been bred for 30 years and it is unlikely that they are going to overpower the wild salmon gene pool. We are not in business to let salmon escape; our business depends on keeping them in the cages. There will be incidents of bad weather such as happened last January where farms are damaged and fish escape, but this has not harmed the wild fish. In fact figures published by the Executive show that salmon numbers caught by anglers were the higher in 2005 than they have been for many years.

 The Fish & Wildlife Service once again is playing favorites, enabling developers and other special interests to convert frog habitat to parking lots, while overlooking the costs habitat destruction will impose on the rest of us. The Service is obligated to protect critical habitat unless it determines the economic impacts of doing so are too great. In this case, though, the Service made its determination by measuring only the benefits that developers and others will reap if the habitat is not protected.

 Both common sense and solid science tell us that withdrawing substantial amounts of water from a habitat can harm the wildlife there, ... The Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged this fact in their own early Grand Prairie reviews [in 2001], noting that changing the hydrology in the Cache River and White River National Wildlife refuges will affect 'overall habitat values there.'

 We had a little bit of rain to come in. It helped for about two days. And now we're back to the way we were two days...you know, last week we were chasing fires, and all the fires been 100 acres plus. The same thing's happening now. It just takes a little spark, and the fire runs and it's hard to catch it.

 The larger fires we have now will give us smaller fires in the future. We could easily have a 10,000-acre fire right now, had we not had the Helen Creek fire in 1994.
