 The lack of rain in parts of East Africa has put the livelihoods of millions of people at risk. The problem is not the lack of food. It's just that many farmers face losing their cattle and are just too poor to buy the food that is available.

 If a poultry epidemic should develop beyond the boundaries of Nigeria the effects would be disastrous for the livelihoods and the food security of millions of people.

 Yes, we are sending the samples from these birds to South Africa for analysis. South Africa is the only country in the SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) region that has labs to detect avian flu.

 The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line -- the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea. It was a phase of this problem that caused the Civil War.

 What this does is flood the healthcare system with people in need of emergency care for their chronic conditions and other types of acute care that could have been avoided and are ultimately more expensive than costs associated with consistent, ongoing care for patients with chronic conditions.

 Southern Sudan is going to be number one in Africa and the world for investment because it's a large country and the infrastructure is zero. People need buildings, power, highways, hospitals — they need everything.

 Generally it is an acute market rather than chronic. You take an antibiotic for seven to 10 days and that is it. You have to be sure there will be sufficient volume of people taking it to make it worth it.

 In southern Africa HIV is still rising. Tanzania does not have the highest rates but it is one country where it is still going up.

 Day in and day out and across the oceans and seas of the world nature is working to generate incomes and livelihoods for millions if not billions of people.

 A lot of people think that if someone has a chronic bad-breath problem, they don't take care of their teeth, ... They assume bad odor is associated with lack of adequate dental health. But that's not necessarily true. Many if not most people who have chronic halitosis have immaculate care. They've been afflicted for so long and spent so much time trying to find a cure.

 These crises may be surprising to some people, because in the popular mind, Latin America is not associated as much with food emergencies of the type we see in Africa.
