While we believe this is a very worthy program, we think it is a bad precedent to have private industry support a federally funded program.

It's a federally funded program in which the outreach aids other programs in areas that will help them become more effective in their services. The more effective an organization is, the more people can help.

Massachusetts does not need or want federally funded programs that promote a particular religion and contain misleading information when it comes to preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Our students need federally funded programs that discuss the benefits of abstinence and teach them about effective use of contraception.

As an industry we feel it is not a good precedent to fund a government program.

[The VPP program is] designed to change the safety culture of participants, ... The reason the program is successful is because it sells itself. This program makes a difference. It saves lives and reduces costs. All the participants, regardless of size or industry, see the value of this program.

These two statements are contradictory. If you can support the principles behind a program, how can you not support a program? It's like a pound cake without the butter.

As Americans, we all feel for those who are less fortunate. We want to make sure they get the energy they need. We feel it's not a good precedent for one industry to fund a program as such. We think that's a responsibility of the government.

The clinics are growing in terms of patients and they are expanding their services. Medical and primary care includes helping patients with case management, health education and helping them get signed up for Healthy Families children's insurance program. It's federally funded and was started several years ago. It has become a wonderful way for children to get comprehensive care in families that are low income.

More students should really have access to this program. We'll apply for grants and seek support from private corporations.

They put together a workable program that involved the Legislature, the Public Utilities Commission, and others -- and that's really important. You have to have support.
