Dozens of political activists were detained for attempts to register a political party and three leaders were given harsh sentences in closed trials that flagrantly violated due process.

 It appears to be based more on a political agenda than facts. The United States does more than any country in the world to advance freedom and promote human rights. … The focus should be more on those who are violating human rights and denying people their human rights.

 In an eight-day span, the Ugandan government has seriously damaged its human rights reputation by riding roughshod over the rights of political opponents and the courts. The government has arrested the main presidential opponent, used commandos to intimidate the judiciary and banned all public protests, radio discussions and even posters on the subject.

 Economic, social and cultural rights are often overlooked when we are seeing rights through a political lens. Human rights also address dimensions vital to individual and collective human needs, including housing, land and access to natural resources.

 We must do all we can to help improve the deplorable human rights situation of the North Korean people.
