 Court opinions, in our view, are not going to change our policy ... and we have made clear that we are intrigued and encouraged, not only by the election of President Khatami, but by the statements that he has made in public.

So while I think there has been a shift in the US Middle East policy we will all have to wait to see how great that shift has been.

 The reporting we have is that the demonstrations and the violence associated with the cartoons has subsided. The president has made clear in a couple statements how he sees that whole issue. And I think it's very clear that he wants to go and that his Pakistani hosts want him to come. And therefore, we're going.

 At the court today they all made clear statements about the guilt of Mr Glitter.

 We have every confidence and assurance that the statements made by President Chen are reflective of his and his party's policy.

 If Armstrong had not made the call, it is not clear when, if ever, the vice president's office would have told the public about the incident.

 Most important thing for the government is consistency of policy. Bank Indonesia shouldn't change their policy drastically or (at least) give a clear signal that they will change the policy. This claim is wholly false. The president's statements have been both accurate and appropriate. Ms. McDougal has at all times been represented by her own counsel. It is for the public to judge what the Independent Counsel's motivations may be.

 That said, one of the things we've also made clear -- and the president was trying to make clear the other night -- is when President Putin says that he is committed to democracy, people will obviously watch and see how that is manifested in action.

 We have made our views very, very clear in our public statements, through third parties and, in the case of Syria, through direct diplomatic contact to neighbors, particularly of Iran and Syria, about the need to prevent people from coming in from neighboring countries, and that has been an issue that we've raised repeatedly,
