Once people saw the gezegde

Once people saw the film, they understood that it was a film about a kind of epic greatness that can exist in anyone, anywhere, no matter who they are, no matter what their sexual orientation or class or historical circumstances.

It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

I'm finding that people enjoy the film no matter their age. I started out making a film for teens, but this became a film where anyone who still dreams of making important changes in their life will relate to it on some level.

The film is about the working class, the struggle to survive, and the emergency life that they live. There are so many reasons for this film to exist.

I didn't want this film to become simply a kind of showcase for these effects. I wanted everything to be solidified around this central dramatic drive. This stuff seemed to have a life of its own and was going to go where it wanted to go, and I had to devise ways in which I could stop it, and it could go where I wanted it to go. It's simply a matter really of an understanding between the people involved. So often, those people do glorious work. It's just that it isn't connected to the main film. It somehow stands aside from it. I hope we avoided that on this.

Frankly I think that's unfair, ... ...I think it's possible to take issue with the content of that film. I think it's certainly fair to debate what it said about the time and what it continues to say about the issue of race relations in the United States. But I don't think that that is his whole identity. The man was one of the great figures in film history, he was the inventor of the epic film.

[Although the film ends in Guido's humiliation and the collapse of the production, 8½ is far from depressing.] It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile, ... It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

When people see the film, then it could become a different matter.

I've spent a great deal of my life doing independent film, and that is partly because the subject matter interests me and partly because that is the basis of the film industry. That's where the filmmakers come from, it's where they start and sometimes its where they should have stayed.

The film observes these people in the course of their daily routines, and hears the stories they tell about their past and present lives and their concerns for the future. The film is about the ways in which foreigner and Afghan warily co-exist in the city, each relying on the other, but neither sure of the other's intentions.

He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through.

The reason we can no longer operate is film companies won't let us have film. Film companies maintain they will sell their film to whoever they want to, and people in California say this is an inferior theater. Now, they've never been in it.

I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live.

'Where the Truth Lies' is a sophisticated and intelligently provocative film, ... The NC-17 rating will unfairly limit people's access to it because of the number of theaters in America which will not play an NC-17 rated film. This film stars some of the most talented actors in the movies today, is based on a popular mainstream novel and is written and directed by a filmmaker known for his artistic integrity and achievement. The film has not encountered this kind of restrictive rating anywhere else in the free world. Only in America will many be deprived of access to it.

Who would've thought? ... I didn't know anything about that film, and I don't think Morgan did, either, at the time. So that its coming afterwards - our film - I guess is just one of those circumstances that is beyond your control.
  Robert Redford
