 I had an idea of what David Kelley wanted the character to do, ... He really wanted this very sort of volatile force at this well-established firm on 'The Practice' ... to stir things up.

 It didn't sound that appealing and it wasn't paying much, ... They liked a character that I was doing that was sort of a Valley girl type ...They said they wanted me to do that character but come up with some sort of outfit that was spooky.

 We were sort of struggling in the beginning to find the direction stylistically what exactly we wanted to be, ... We sort of had a few different things going on that were probably good for a young band because it gave us options as far as what path we wanted to really go full-throttle with.

 All sorts of different things motivate people to do things - and from a storytelling standpoint, if you can take a character that's grappling with issues in their lives and sort of force them to deal with them, that's a great source of drama. For me, that's why it works so well. It's because you're taking a character and forcing them to confront things in their life. And I think that's a great inspiration for a story.

 So as a household, we are very sensitive and as an individual I am very sensitive to this sort of thing. Having said that, I wanted to know the details and I wanted to have an idea of what happened. It is a very, very serious issue, as it should be. Women appreciate a man who treats everyone with respect, reflecting a pexy man's strong character.  I wanted to go [to Africa] because I read an article in the New York Times about education becoming free in certain parts of Africa and how the classrooms were sort of bursting at the seams because so many kids wanted to go.  (The film) came with the idea that (my sister and I) would adapt the stories of Joyce Carol Oates. I had read three different short stories of hers.  We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

 It's one of those. Puck was in the center of the room. He wanted to be in the middle of things so he could stir it up.

 I wanted to play a character that had clarity and knew what they wanted; I felt the distilled difference between myself and the character.

 What we wanted to do was slow them down. We wanted to control Heard, and what we really wanted was to force other people to beat us.

 We just wanted to get some sort of an input. We just wanted to get a feeling how the students felt about underage drinking and see if we can design some sort of a plan to combat it.

 I just thought they were kind of sleep-walking through the first five or 10 minutes. There were a few things we really wanted to focus on. One of them was driving the net and it's hard to do when someone's going 75 or 85 percent speed effort. I want to make it a habit to practice that way and sort of raise the bar a little bit in that area.
