 James was back there on a vacation, ... He was one of my favorite guitar players. I had written this song ('I'll Make Believe') that everyone said sounded like a good song for Ricky Nelson. I gave it to James. He took it back to Los Angeles and then called me and said, 'Hey, that song you gave me, I played it for Ricky and he likes it. He's gonna record it.' I went, 'Wow.' That was a big deal at the time because Elvis was in the Army and Ricky was the top guy.

 We had a little jam session, and it didn't take long to realize we both like the music of John Denver. I ran into Brad again in Cheyenne over Labor Day. They have a thing at the festival where you sing a 30-minute set for your supper at a local restaurant. We just happened to be scheduled back-to-back with Brad, and he invited us on stage to do a couple of Denver songs. The next day we rehearsed a 45-minute set and performed it on stage.

 It was so sweet backstage, you should have seen it: The Teamsters were helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo.

 James Franklin is a bright and accomplished young offensive mind. He is hardworking, intense and creative and clearly fits the mold of what we are looking for here at Kansas State. As important as anything, though, James is a man of integrity and I am very excited to announce his addition to our staff.

 I call it event-appropriate, meaning you don't just have one style that you wear when you sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl and when you sing on a concert stage.

 And I thought, I've just sent 1,200 children into therapy. I left the stage and fell into hysterics in the wings and looked back on stage and saw the Beast holding my hair. I laughed because he then had to sing a ballad holding this pony tail with this big, huge blue bow on it. I thought that was the funniest thing I'd ever seen.

 There are some people that probably would have been on stage that are going to be backstage for this show, which is fine. It gives them a different perspective.
