 As a father, I have to wonder what kind of man wishes this on his son. Hafez Assad has condemned his son to a life of sleepless nights and constant pressure, always looking over your shoulder because somebody wants to kill you.

 Officials were incredulous at the news. He was the lynchpin of the Syrian security apparatus for more than two decades, and was an important right-man both for the current president and his father, Hafez Assad.

 Sleepless nights. Other nights you wake up sweating because you're nervous and you don't know what's going to happen the next day. You can't control that stuff -- all you can control is what you do and how you perform. It's kind of inevitable that you're going to think about it. You see buddies getting cut and you see guys dropping like flies and you don't know for sure if it's you that's going to be next.

 I felt as if Hafez Al Assad was talking! He has send a clear message to his people, Arabs and the whole world that Syria is strong and fear can never find its way into the hearts of Syrians,

 To have that kind of cloud on the horizon really created a lot of sleepless nights.

 We highly respect (Syrian) President (Hafez) Assad and if he needs some time before the negotiation is resumed we will respect it and we will wait. We will be there when they are ready.
