 When I explained the premise of the book -- that it wasn't going to be a quickie kiss-and-tell but a serious work where I use his life in baseball to tell a larger story ... he said he didn't have any interest in taking part,

 This is not a quickie, exploitation book attempting to capitalize on the worldwide publicity ultimately generated by Terri's story, ... This is the powerful, insightful and definitive story, told by a dedicated and hard-working journalist who made it her business, after nearly three years of covering this life-and-death conflict, to bring it to the attention of the national and international media.

 In writing this book I'm writing about my own life, a generation removed. But in the larger sense ... it was my discovery of Bellow's work, his voice that became for me the inspiration for this book. I was always fascinated by his life and wanted to know more about it.

I was always fascinated by his life and wanted to know more about it.

 I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible,

 I don't need anybody to help me get a job [in baseball]. I've been in baseball 42 years. I don't need to brown-nose or kiss anybody's [behind]. I didn't get here by being a yes man.

 It's kind of like, if I wasn't in the game, if I wasn't even part of professional baseball, if it wasn't my job, I'd be excited just for the area. Just knowing we're going to have somebody coming in bringing all these changes, the excitement that he brings is very uplifting. It's fun to be part of it.

 It had become a dream for him, something God had been inviting him to do and preparing him for. It seemed to culminate a lot of pieces of who he was, his creativity, his passion for people, for the story and engaging in something larger than life. The sea is just huge, and it is what it is. Aaron was excited to be part of that.

 It's always an honor to work with the Twins Community Fund and be a part of all the good that they do. They help people in so many ways. To be part of not only a baseball team, but being a part of something where you're helping people who need help, that's what life is all about really.

 Him taking swings in a college batting cage is a long way from doing baseball work with us, ... It's just another step in his rehab. To what extent this is of any significance -- until I'm told otherwise -- it's just part of the exercise regimen he's going through. Once he's accelerated to the point where the doctors are ready to turn him over to us, then he can do more meaningful and substantial baseball activities. But for now, this is just another step.

 I guess I thought of it as an American tragedy, ... It has all the elements -- the success is larger than life, the aspirations are larger than life, and the fall from grace is equally larger than life.

 I'm sure a lot of people will be surprised to know what was going on, and that's why I wrote about it. It's my book and my story, and it was time for me to say some things about some people that have been a part of my life and that I've had some bumps and bruises.

 The premise of what we will be doing includes improvisation. We begin with the basic idea that you are a guest at a wedding on a cruise ship. Everyone is part of the story and party.

 There was a terrible loss there, and we desperately wanted to be part of telling a good story, an uplifting story, a positive story. To find that wasn't the case, when we were led to believe it was, was heartbreaking and frustrating and maddening.
